Information Technology, or IT, is the use of computers and software to manage information.Sometimes IT is called Management Information Services (or MIS) or simply as Information Services (or IS). In a large company the IT folks would be responsible for storing information, protecting information, processing the information, transmitting the information and later retrieving information as necessary.
In college, it would be a Computer Science IT degree, not a single class.
At the moment, IT is a stable profession, paying about the average engineering salaries, benefits, etc of the average larger company. There are some indications that the future of IT may be less than has been expected, but it is still a fine profession.
If you have a talent for organizing and correlating data in your daily life, and if you like computers, and particularly if you enjoy programming, I would recommend an IT career highly. If you are just curious, I recommend talking a computer and programming course to become more familiar with the overall idea.
